In September, young people of different skin tones gathered in the lecture hall of the Longgang Enterprise Internationalization Service Base, greeting one another in various languages and sharing stories. This was the orientation ceremony of the Shaw Global Bridge Program at Shaw College, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen — held as the College marked its 10th anniversary. Under the theme “Bridge the Divide, Carry the Moment” ,the event on September 4 welcomed international freshmen and Chinese Cultural Ambassadors for the 2026-2027 academic year, co-organized by Shaw College and the Longgang International Communication Center.

In his welcome address, Mr. Laurie Pearcey, Master of Shaw College, said: “Whether you are Chinese or international, Longgang is a fantastic place for you to consider for a future global journey. This is a meeting place for citizens of the world.” In 2026, CUHK-Shenzhen welcomed a record number of nearly 500 international students from more than 30 countries and regions, with Shaw College alone hosting students of 17 nationalities. Citing President Professor Xu Yangsheng’s vision — “seeing China with a global perspective and seeing the world with a Chinese perspective” — he emphasized that the Shaw Global Bridge Program is a vivid embodiment of this philosophy.

The Shaw Global Bridge Program is a cross-cultural platform established by Shaw College to foster meaningful interactions between Chinese and international students through cultural excursions and company visits. This year, the program introduced a new “Shaw Bridge Mentor” role — seven senior students selected from the inaugural cohort to help freshmen adapt to campus life and lead cross-cultural activities. At the flag-presentation ceremony, Mr. Laurie Pearcey, together with Mr. Dong Baohong, Deputy General Manager and Deputy Chief Editor of Longgang Convergence Media Group, and Mr. Paul Ke, Director of the Office of Academic Links at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, presented the flags to the mentors.

The event was held at the Longgang Enterprise Internationalization Service Base, Shenzhen’s first district-level service platform for enterprises going global. Mr. Pearcey expressed his hope that this space would help students learn about Longgang’s enterprises while providing these companies with a genuine international perspective. The Longgang International Communication Center offers students opportunities through its Global Storytellers Alliance and internships — a win-win collaboration in which students broaden their horizons, enterprises gain youthful international insights, and Longgang’s global narrative takes root among the younger generation.

International students expressed their enthusiasm for Longgang. One freshman said she was impressed by the size of the campus and the city, as well as its cultural diversity. Another said the people are friendly and that she is learning Chinese to communicate better. Together, they shouted “Longgangmaxxing!” — the most heartfelt declaration from global youth to Longgang.

The closing session featured a dialogue segment titled “Cultural Drift,” in which students shared their cultural identities, discussed stereotypes about their home countries, and voiced their cross-cultural aspirations for the year ahead. After three rounds of conversation, representatives from each group took the stage to share their takeaways — authentic and personal stories that, together, painted a vivid portrait of a world united in diversity.

Bridge the divide, Carry the moment. In Longgang, every encounter is the beginning of a story.
