“阿爾法和歐米伽”一詞源自希臘字母表的第一個字母（阿爾法：Α或α）和最後一個字母（歐米伽：Ω或ω）。該短語多次出現在《啟示錄》中（1:8、21:6和22:13），上帝在其中宣稱：“我是阿爾法，也是歐米伽；是始，也是終；是首先的，也是末後的。”到了十四世紀，該短語已進入英語日常使用，意為絕對整體、本質或某事的“全部和終結”。
