!!JewsandMuslimsrecognizedsevenconcentricheavens,thehighestbeingtheabodeofGod.InJewishtradition,theselevelsweregradedaccordingtothedegreeofmeritonehasacquiredorcontributionsonehasmadeonearth,andaccordingtothesuccessivestepstakenbythesoulafterdeath.Thenumberseven,sacredinbiblicaltradition,gavethiscosmologyitsstructure.Bythe19thcentury,thetermwasextendedtomeanastateofsupremebliss,withoutreligiousconnotation.

猶太教和伊斯蘭教都認為有七重天，其中最高層是上帝居所。猶太傳統中，這些層級是根據人在世時累積的功德或貢獻，以及死後靈魂所經歷的階段劃分的。數字“七”在《聖經》傳統中具有神聖意義，構成宇宙觀結構基礎。到了十九世紀，意思被擴展，用來指稱一種極樂狀態，不再帶有宗教色彩。
