!!Theword"gamut"comesfromthemedievalmusicalscaleofGuidoofArezzo(11thcentury),beingacontractionof"gamma"and"ut",thelowestandhighestnotesrespectively.Thus,gamutcoverstheentirescaleofmusicalnotes.Thefirstrecordeduseofthefigurativephrase"torunthegamut"appearedinthe1830s.Itquicklybecamepopulartomeancoveringacompleterangeofemotions,colors,prices,opinions,oranyotherspectrum.

“Gamut”一詞源自中世紀音樂家阿雷佐的圭多（十一世紀）所發展的音階，是“gamma”與“ut”兩個音的縮寫，分別代表最低音與最高音。因此，“gamut”涵蓋整個音階。比喻性的片語“torunthegamut”首次記錄於一八三○年代，之後迅速流行，用來表示涵蓋情緒、顏色、價格、意見或任何其他範疇的完整範圍。
